A shirt as expensive as Lacoste would often lead people to tiptoe on shirt care. While gentle hand washing is advantageous, it seems that the tell-tale "Hand wash only" advice is overrated.
Make no mistake: Lacoste shirts are durable and machine-washable. However, should there be two things to be careful of, these would be shrinkage and color fading.
Lacoste is made of cotton. Even if the Asian versions use pre-shrunk fabric, expect to see your shirt to shrink after the first few washes.
The degree of shrinkage, we heard, is about 5 to 10 percent of the original size. You probably won't even notice this, considering that classic fit shirts tend to be on the wide side.
Color fading is another thing shirt wearers should expect in the long run. This is why it's best to avoid strong laundry detergents, especially bleach. The Lacoste shirts do not bleed.
To minimize shrinkage and to preserve the color longer, air drying is recommended. Just make sure that the shirt is not exposed directly to sunlight for a long period. You might want to do your laundry in the evenings.
For best results, follow the Devanlay care tag attached to the inner portion of your Lacoste shirt. The instructions are pretty straight-forward:
- Machine wash warm
- Do not bleach
- Do not tumble dry
- Do not dry clean
We did our own durability test over the weekend. The "durability test" bit is actually an excuse. We don't have time to hand-wash our clothes.
We tossed two of our Lacoste shirts into the washing machine, and we were pleased that both of them came out clean and unscathed. The colors were okay; we did not notice any shrinkage whatsoever. We'll know once we wear them.
